Sport Psychology for Teams and Clubs: Building Identity Into Behaviour

A team identity needs to be lived

Words such as respect, courage and togetherness can look impressive on a wall, but values become meaningful only when people can describe what they look like in behaviour. A useful team process connects identity to observable actions.

Start with who we want to be

Teams can explore what membership means, what they want others to experience when they encounter the team and which behaviours represent that identity. This gives players and staff language they can use when making decisions under pressure.

Shared ownership matters

A culture imposed entirely by one person is different from one that players and staff have helped shape. Facilitated discussion can give members a meaningful role in defining standards while coaches remain responsible for the environment and boundaries they lead.

Workshops are only the beginning

A single workshop can create clarity, but culture is expressed repeatedly at training, in selection, during mistakes and in competition. Follow-up observation and discussion can help teams notice whether their agreed behaviours are actually being lived.

Support for clubs

Perform With Courage supports teams and clubs through workshops, psychological profiling discussions, coach development, observation and ongoing sport psychology work. I am Adriano Muhlbauer, a Sport and Exercise Psychologist in Training, and consultations can be booked through Perform With Courage.
