Coaches influence the psychological environment

The way feedback is delivered, mistakes are treated, roles are communicated and decisions are explained can influence how athletes experience a sporting environment. Psychology therefore exists within coaching even when no psychologist is present.

Understanding before intervening

Behaviour that looks like low motivation, poor confidence or disengagement may have different meanings for different athletes. Curiosity can help a coach understand what is happening before choosing how to respond.

Values need behavioural meaning

If a coach values responsibility, courage or respect, the next question is what those ideas look like during training. Turning abstract values into specific behaviours makes them easier to model, discuss and revisit.

Developing independent athletes

Psychologically informed coaching does not mean removing challenge. It can involve giving athletes appropriate responsibility, encouraging reflection, allowing meaningful choices and helping them learn to evaluate their own performance.
