Sport Psychology for Athletes: More Than Confidence and Mental Skills
There is no single athlete problem
Athletes often arrive wanting more confidence, less overthinking or better control under pressure. Those concerns matter, but the same symptom can mean very different things for different people. Understanding the athlete's experience is therefore an important first step.
Identity and performance
When sport becomes closely connected to identity, mistakes, selection and results can feel like judgments about the whole person. Exploring who the athlete is within and beyond performance can create room to respond differently to success, failure and uncertainty.
Courage rather than certainty
Confidence is useful, but athletes cannot guarantee that they will always feel confident. Courage offers another possibility: choosing to engage with what matters even when uncertainty, anxiety or doubt remain present.
Psychological skills have a place
Goal setting, routines, attentional strategies, imagery and other psychological skills can be valuable. In my work they are selected because they fit the athlete and the situation, rather than being prescribed automatically.
Working together
I am Adriano Muhlbauer, Sport and Exercise Psychologist in Training and founder of Perform With Courage. My aim is to create a space where athletes can understand their experience, challenge assumptions, explore choices and develop greater independence. Individual sessions are available through Perform With Courage.
