Perform With Courage. Because Performance Starts With Choice.
By Adriano Muhlbauer, Sport Psychologist in Training
Performance is part of life. Whether you are competing on the field, leading a team at work, giving a presentation, or making decisions under pressure, how you think, feel, and act determines your results. This is where sport and performance psychology comes in.
If you have ever wondered what sport psychology really is, or what a sport psychologist actually does, this article will give you a clear, research-based explanation.
What Is Sport Psychology?
Sport psychology is the scientific study of how psychological factors influence performance, participation, and well-being in sport, exercise, and physical activity.
According to the FEPSAC Position Statement:
“Sport psychology is concerned with the psychological foundations, processes and consequences of the psychological regulation of sport-related activities of one or several persons acting as the subject(s) of the activity. The focus may be on behaviour or on different psychological dimensions of human behaviour, i.e. affective, cognitive, motivational or sensori-motor dimensions. The physical activity can take place in competitive, educational, recreational, preventative and rehabilitation settings and includes health-related exercise. Subjects are all persons involved in the different sport and exercise settings, e.g., athletes, coaches, officials, teachers, physiotherapists, parents, spectators etc.” (FEPSAC, 2013)
A complementary working definition highlights the applied aspect of the field:
“Applied sport and performance psychology involves extending theory and research into practice to educate athletes, coaches, and other performance professionals about the psychological aspects of their sport or performance and to help them apply psychological skills to enhance performance and well-being.” (Sly, 2016)
Together, these definitions show that sport and performance psychology is both scientific and practical. It focuses on understanding behaviour and mental processes to improve performance, learning, and well-being.
Performance Psychology Works With Anyone in Any Field
Performance is not limited to sport. Every person performs in some way every day at work, in relationships, in school, in creative pursuits, or in personal goals.
My approach is holistic. I work with anyone who wants to understand themselves better and improve the way they perform in their life. You do not need to be an athlete. You only need to want to perform with clarity, confidence, and courage.
Whether you are striving to make better decisions under pressure, manage emotions, communicate more effectively, or simply reach your potential, performance psychology can help you get there.
Humans Are the Authors of Their Own Experiences
Performance psychology is grounded in existential psychology and focuses on growth, discovery, and the human experience. Humans are the authors of their own experiences, and my role is to guide individuals, teams, and organizations in uncovering the courage, clarity, and awareness to shape their own path. My approach is flexible and tailored to each context, whether sport, business, parenting, or personal development. It may include mental skills training, counselling, reflective exercises, or workshops. These are all designed to deepen understanding, foster resilience, and support authentic performance.
My approach is also rooted in the six pillars of existential psychology. You are free to make choices and responsible for the consequences, and I guide you while you decide who you want to be. True performance happens when you act authentically, in alignment with your values and your genuine self. Courage is essential because facing uncertainty, risk, and fear directly drives growth. Mistakes are not failures to hide from but opportunities to learn, adapt, and develop. Meaning and purpose matter because performance becomes most powerful when it connects to what truly matters to you beyond outcomes or external measures. Finally, your relationships and connections to others shape your decisions, actions, and overall performance. Together, these principles help build self-awareness, resilience, independence, and long-term capability in sport, work, or everyday life.
What sets my approach apart is that it does not rely on one-size-fits-all solutions. It creates a space where individuals and groups can explore values, confront fear, and experiment with new ways of performing, leading, and being while building courage and insight that lasts beyond the sessions themselves. Engaging with me means developing the tools, awareness, and mindset to navigate uncertainty, make choices aligned with core values, and grow in a sustainable and authentic way. This is not about temporary fixes. It is about unlocking potential and freedom that can be carried forward into every area of life.
